Ok…so the summer before last I got half my hair shaved off and since taking the plunge I’m always faced with questions like:
“Why did you do it?” – “How does it feel?” – “How do you maintain it?”
So I’ve decided to go a little into depth about my decision and offer a few tips and bits of advice. The main reason I got it done was because I was going through a different kind of phase in my life, I call this phase ‘21 syndrome’ lol. I’ve named it this because I had recently turned 21 and was very enthusiastic about my new found freedom Lol.
My Hairspiration Ms Anthony!
One evening during this era a certain somebody (no names lol) showed me a picture of Lala Anthony with her half-do and said “this is so you.” I totally dismissed the thought and continued my evening as normal. The next day however I combed my natural hair out into a humongous afro and dreaded getting it cainrowed for my usual style of a weaved centre parting. That’s when it hit me “Get rid of half. Duh!” so I parted half, grabbed my sisters ran to the closest barber shop before I could change my mind lol, the rest is pretty much history.
Alot of people believe the trend started with Cassie…Wrong!
I recall Kelis hitting the drop first!
Emeli Sande is notorious for her platinum shaved back and sides.
Miley Cyrus. What was that saying again? “Bad girls do it well..” 10/10
Although she was last to jump on the bandwagon Rihanna owned it!
Jada Pinkett-Smith rocks hers effortlessly! Beautiful on her!
Even a young Willow Smith. Like mother like daughter! Willow helped popularize this hairstyle from a very young age!
Sexy Scary spice girl Mel B looks amazing in hers. Another mother daughter trend too! Do you and your mum rock the same hair style at the same time? Lol
Actress Rosario Dawson, no matter how old you are this hairstyle has the potential to suit all! No offence Rosario lol!
Me! (Wonu lol)
For anybody thinking about going for the chop I advise you to think about it properly. I also advise you to ask family or friends for their honest opinions in regards to the hairstyle and your head shape. Having a half-do does require a fair bit of maintenance because you have the best of both worlds, which means living in both worlds. Short hair grows fairly fast so depending on your desired length (skin, level 1,2 or 3) regular trips to the barber shop are a must! A year and a half later and I can honestly say I still digg it and have no plans on growing it back just yet lol. Lastly there are truly no disadvantages to being half bald! In fact I’d say it’s the exact opposite, with this hairstyle comes a sense of liberty and eccentricity.
