TRENDS: CELEBS IN ANKARA!

THIS IS SUCH A CONTROVERSIAL TREND! AS A NIGERIAN I’M SO FAMILIAR WITH ANKARA MATERIAL, I’VE BEEN WEARING IT SINCE I WAS A LIL GIRL. I KNOW I SPEAK FOR MANY, THAT LIVING ABROAD CAN MAKE IT VERY EASY TO TAKE THE MATERIAL FOR GRANTED. I LOVE HOW CELEBS & DESIGNERS GLORIFY ANKARA! & REMIND US HOW SPECIAL THE AFRICAN TEXTILE IS! CHECK THEM OUT BELOW…

Solange’s love for Ankara is beautiful! She’s always in the material. Whether its a dress, shirt, shorts or a turban!

I fell in love with Kim Kardashian all over again when I first saw her in this. She looks so elegant in Ankara!

I love Ankara too. And Being from Ghana I have grown up with it.

It’s good to see how you can use the cloth to make so many different things but if I am being honest I don’t like how certain fashion houses such as Burberry is taking the print and not even stating it’s origins clearly using it and charging the most ridic prices to add to their collections. That’s annoying much!!

I think one day a Designer should pair up with an up and coming/established designer in Africa or in the uk/states.(where ever r they are based) and create affordable fashion taking inspiration from Ankara now that would be fab right!!

    That’s just my personal opinion.

    Hot Happenings!

OMG! I agree with you 100%!

Its frustrating when fashion houses don’t give credit to the origin of the material and instead just call it ‘African Fashion’! That side is very annoying.

I love the idea of Designers teaming up with African designers to together create affordable Ankara collections! Because the price these designs are retailing for are very expensive, considering how cheap and accessible Ankara actually is.

Glad to here your on board and 100% agree. Yes thats right African fashion or Tribal. Yet don’t state the origins but or even class as their own.. hmmm!!

I asked my friend Shelia Boateng who is being N’Kya Designs(http://nkyadesignsuk.com/) which designer would she like to team up with and she stated Stella Mc Cartney. Now that I could defo see..

Most defo at the outlandish price points. Any Tom, Dick n Harry. Can easily pick up the Ankara fabric and get something made at a cheaper price point and still look 100% better then these so called high fashion houses.

    Lovely piece Funmi
This trend started in 2009 (well everywhere else but Africa where like u said, it’s been a staple)
And it shows no signs of letting up. I hope it continues to grow with more of the celebrities rocking pieces by African designers.
The dress Dawn is wearing is Deola Sagoe not Jewel by Lisa
